It was great to see Caroline’s comments about talking to pupils about words. This week my Higher class stumbled over: “futile”, “quixotic” and “misbegotten”. I’ve been using a three stage approach of “what does the word mean?” If the class doesn’t know (and even if I know) I look it up in the dictionary or google it on the overhead projector. Then I discuss how the meaning fits the context. In order to secure understanding I then ask them if they can think of a) another situation within the school that the word could be used and b) a situation outside of the school where the word could apply. In some ways I think that follows the notions of developing, consolidating and secure. It would be great to see more and more staff talking about words and not assuming that they are understood until they have been discussed.
